Newcastle United have today completed the signing of Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City for a fee believed to be in the region of £12million.

The 23-year-old has signed a five-and-a-half-year-deal with United, and will be available for selection for this weekend’s game with West Ham.

Shelvey arrived on Tyneside for his medical this morning after Swansea accepted the Magpies’ hefty bid for the England international.

The tenacious centre midfielder joined Swansea from Liverpool for a fee of £5m in July 2013 and was one of the main reasons for the Swans’ impressive eight-placed finish in the 2014/2015 season.

However, after falling out of place at the Welsh club, Shelvey played his last game under Alan Curtis a few days ago against Oxford United.

The former Charlton youth prodigy is Newcastle’s second January signing, arriving after fellow midfield player Henri Saivet.
