Newcastle have moved out of the relegation zone after withstanding heavy pressure in the second half to hold out for a 2-1 victory at home to West Ham.

Goals from Ayoze Perez and Georginio Wijnaldum had set Steve McClaren’s side on their way to their fifth league win of the season, but they were made to sweat after Chancel Mbemba handed the Hammers a second half life-line.

West Ham were lucky to go in at the break just two goals down as the Magpies dominated the first half, with new boy Jonjo Shelvey running the game.

Mbemba’s sloppy backpass to Rob Elliot allowed the Hammers back into the game and relieved the pressure on the London club, but Newcastle were resilient and kept on creating chances.

The game could have been put to bed as a number of chances fell to Aleksandar Mitrovic, but the combination of poor finishing and top quality goalkeeping by Adrian kept the scoreline at 2-1.
