Newcastle agree £12million Townsend deal

Today’s headlines are dominated by the news of Newcastle’s £12million swoop for Spurs’ winger Andros Townsend, who will undergo a medical on Wednesday after arriving on Tyneside late this evening.

The Magpies had been locked in talks over the England international for a large chunk of the window with little joy, however, it looks like Steve McClaren will finally land his man after Spurs’ chairman Daniel Levy agreed to budge on his extortionate £14million asking price for the unsettled 24-year-old.

Following the news of his impending switch to St James’ Park, Townsend spoke of his delight at securing a switch to “the only club he wanted to join”.

Townsend is expected to be officially confirmed as a Newcastle player within the next 24 hours, taking the Magpies’ January spend close to the £30million mark.
