Berahino bid 'made a statement'

Despite failing in their audacious, big-money move for West Brom striker Saido Berahino, Steve McClaren believes that Newcastle’s £21million bid for the English starlet has sent out a statement of intent to the rest of the Premier League.

Speaking to The Chronicle, the Magpies boss said:

“It again shows the ambition of the club and our intent to make a huge bid like that. It would have been a bonus.

“The club and the board got together and discussed it. It was ambitious and out there making a statement. It would have been a bonus had it come off.

“It hasn’t, we have got what we have got and it’s a very good squad now. We have enough to see us through and score goals.”
