Earlier today, after days of rumours and speculation, it was announced that Steve McClaren had lost his job as Newcastle United head coach – and that Rafael Benitez would take his place at the helm.

The Spaniard has been given the title of ‘manager’, which shows a significant transformation from the failed ‘head coach’ model that McClaren cracked under.

Millions of football fans posted their reactions to the appointment on Twitter, and it’s safe to say that Newcastle have gained a lot of recognition in recent hours.

With ten games to go in the Premier League for the Magpies, Benitez and his new coaching staff will hope they can steer the team to safety.

Ian Cathro and Simon Smith both kept their jobs, but Paul Simpson, Steve Black and Alessandro Schoenmaker departed with McClaren.

Benitez’s reign will commence on Monday night when United go toe-to-toe with the league leaders, Leicester City, in the King Power stadium.
