The transfer window is coming to a close, but Newcastle United’s business doesn’t look to be slowing down. Christian Atsu is set to become the Magpies’ twelfth summer signing, with a loan deal with an option to buy agreed with Chelsea. He has yet to fully settle in England, with loan spells at Everton and AFC Bournemouth not working out. This will be his fifth loan since joining Chelsea from Porto in 2013 and he needs to find a permanent home soon, otherwise his once high potential will be wasted.

1) What are Christian Atsu’s strengths and weaknesses as a player?

2) Why do you think he has failed in England to date? Do you think he is able to develop into a good Premier League player in the long run?

3) Do you think the way Chelsea have managed his career has had a damaging impact on his development?

4) Why do you think Rafa Benitez wants to bring Atsu to Newcastle?

5) How would you describe his mentality? Do you think he will have a positive effect on team spirit?

6) Was he a success at Vitesse? What is your best memory from his loan spell?

7) What impact do you think he will have at Newcastle this season? Do you think he will be a success?

L: I hope he gets his chances from Benitez. If he can get back to his 2014 level, he’ll definitely add something to that squad. Like I said before, I don’t know enough about the other attackers/wingers to judge.

C: I am pretty optimistic that Atsu can certainly do a job at Newcastle, if given sufficient game-time. I think that having played in four of Europe’s top leagues, his maturity and experience will be clear for all to see, but I think Magpie fans need a bit of initial patience before their new man can really shine, due to his lack of regular football so far this season.

A huge thank you to both Lars and Cian for taking time to help us out.
