Tiago Ilori - Liverpool

There is no doubt that Ilori is a talented defender. Quick across the ground, strong in the tackle and calm on the ball are just some of the reasons why Liverpool splashed £4 Million on the 23-year-old in 2013. However, despite all his promise, and his outstanding performances for Portugal’s U21 side, Ilori is yet to challenge the Liverpool centre-backs for a first team place and has been loaned out, unsuccessfully, several times.

His short-lived loan spell at Aston Villa didn’t give anyone the chance to see the Portuguese defender at his best, and a drop down into the Championship could be perfect for him.

If Ilori was to come to the Toon, it is unlikely he would be a member of the starting eleven, but with only Coloccini, Mbemba and Jamaal Lascelles being recognised center backs at the club, adding another defender is vital if the club wants to cope with the 46-game-season and ultimately achieve promotion.

The English-born defender has so much in common with one of the stars of the season, Eric Dier, it’s frightening. English born, moved to Portugal, signed by Sporting Lisbon then moving to the Premier League. Next step, breaking into the Liverpool first team and becoming a Portugal regular, could a loan move into the Championship help achieve his undoubted potential?
