What do we need in the Championship? Passion or quality? In my opinion, I believe we need a good balance. In terms of players that we have now, we need to remove players from our squad like Sissoko, Cisse, Coloccini and Janmaat. You may ask Wijnaldum is in that list. Well, if you look at times over the season when he scored and when the team scored in certain circumstances, he was very passionate for the team and the club. Therefore, I believe he does care for the club and would definitely stay if we were still in the Premier League, but he knows he needs to leave for the sake of his own short career in the top league.
The last time I saw Sissoko show passion and desire was his first home game against Chelsea when he had Ashley Coe on toast. Since then, he has showed some energy, like when he scored against West Ham in the last game of the 2014/15 season, and when he scored his FIRST and ONLY goal of last season in 37 appearances in for United. That just isn’t good enough, in my opinion.
So, what is better? Passion is better every time for me. This is because if you look at Leicester, did they have the best team in the league? No, of course not but they had passion, desire and a drive to succeed and this is how they won the league and ended the season as the best team in the country. Why can’t Newcastle do this? They have the fans, the stadium and the money to bring in players they see fit to do the job.
Do we want eleven players like Sissoko or Wijnaldum that all have potential, but are more of a flash in the pan? They do something great one week, then you forget they even play for you the next game week. Or, do we want more players like Mitrovic and Lascelles? These players have potential and they also show that they care. They know what it means to wear the black and white shirt. Unlike players that have been here for many years and still don’t understand, like Coloccini and Cisse.
Passion is the answer to coming straight back up to where we belong. We need players that have quality, but every player that we sign this summer needs passion, they need to understand the fans. This is because we are the ones that will be here once the players leave and we were here before they arrived.
